About the Event
RAY PORTERTHE ORIGINAL GIMP
You won’t expect Ray Porter. He was born with Cerebral Palsy, and he is anything but shy about discussing it- he wants to tell you all about it. Combining real world issues with a razor sharp wit, his comedy is as skewed as his balance. With a goal to both entertain and slyly educate crowds he reveals the inherent absurdity of everyday life and uses harsh yet eloquent satire to explain the often hilarious aspects of living with a disability. Ray aspires to be a mouthpiece for people who feel unheard and alienated and he delivers his message with a sidesplitting punch to the gut that will leave you gasping for air.Ray has been entertaining audiences for nearly a decade, however his brand of comedy began to form before he ever took the stage. Struggling to make sense of being from a small town in Arkansas while belonging to a family from Chicago, his angst quickly became a method of self-defense and a source of comedy both in his real life and in his performances. He hopes to unite people with his darkly funny yet enlightening perspective on life.Ray was an official performer in Austin, Texas at Altercation Comedy Festival in 2018. His act was so well-received that he was invited back as a feature on the infamous Unbookables show (a Doug Stanhope favorite) for Altercation Comedy Festival 2019. He was also an official performer at the 2019 End of the Earth Comedy Festival in Provincetown, Massachusetts.Porter’s style of comedy is unorthodox to say the least. He takes inspiration from George Carlin, Bill Hicks, and Eddie Pepitone. Ray approaches the stage with an edgy mentality derived from punk and rock acts like Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins, and at times Neil Young. His phrasing, delivery, and underlying messages come from the great philosophers he studied in graduate school. He synthesizes comedy, philosophy and everyday life in order to create a singularly hilarious and thought-provoking experience that his audiences will not soon forget.
